What is it?
French immersion is a unique course of study that lets you improve your French while you pursue your degree. It's not about studying French: it's about studying in French.
The option is available in 58 programs, and 16 more are offered in the Faculty of Science's Extended French Stream. These streams can be adapted to your French proficiency and language goals. Upon graduation, you'll receive a French immersion designation on your diploma and a Second Language Certificate - tangible proof of your bilingual abilities.
Why should you do it?
Many students abandon French after high school, either because they think it is too hard, they don't want to study exclusively in French, or they don't see the point.
But uOttawa makes French immersion a breeze, with its special academic resources and scholarships for students studying in French as a second language. In the heart of the nation's capital, you can study, work and play bilingually, improve your French, and bring this valuable skill to the job market.
If you've studied French, you are eligible for French Immersion Studies.
You must be admitted for an undergraduate degree that offers French immersion and pass an online French test. You can then contact an immersion mentor to create a course schedule that will help you achieve your personal language goals.
The next four years
To graduate from French Immersion Studies, you must complete your undergraduate program requirements and take (and pass!) about one third of your courses in French. There are lots of French classes to choose from - in particular, our unique immersion courses. You also must pass an exit test to receive the Second Language Certificate and demonstrate your linguistic competence.
Beyond the classroom
French immersion isn't just a course of study: it's a lifestyle. At uOttawa, there are many opportunities for bilingual students to work and play in their second language. In your first year, you can live in the francophone LeBlanc residence and meet other people who speak French.
The Club d'immersion is a great way to meet real Francophones and other Francophiles. You can also get a job on our bilingual campus, pursue a French CO-OP placement or partake in an exchange to a French-speaking university.
